Kyokushin · Progression

The belt reflects a process—it does not replace it.

Progression at Ittai Dojo aims for each rank to represent real fundamentals, consistency, and understanding. The goal is not to advance quickly—it is to build a practice you can sustain.

Kyokushin obi used as a symbol of progression

What we evaluate

More than memorizing a syllabus.

The Kyokushin program develops progressively. As the student advances, greater control of technical fundamentals, posture, coordination, footwork, conditioning, and understanding of material for that level is expected.

An exam confirms a stage of the process. It does not replace regular training or turn the belt into the main goal.

Fundamentals

Understandable, repeatable technique

We do not require perfect execution before allowing advancement, but we do require fundamentals solid enough that the next level can build on them.

Consistency

Progress happens between exams

Attendance, continuous practice, and the ability to respond to corrections matter more than preparing for an exam over a few weeks.

Judgment

Greater responsibility with rank

As level increases, so do expectations of discipline, self-correction, understanding, and responsibility within practice.

Online exams

From 10th to 7th kyu.

Exams for 10th, 9th, 8th, and 7th kyu can be taken online. At these levels, the virtual format allows evaluation of the technical, physical, and comprehension fundamentals worked on in class.

An online exam does not mean the standard disappears. The student must demonstrate the corresponding material clearly enough to be evaluated.

From 6th kyu

The exam becomes in person.

From 6th kyu onward, exams require physical presence because of sparring requirements. That part of the evaluation cannot responsibly be replaced by a video call.

Virtual training remains useful and real: it continues developing technique, conditioning, coordination, discipline, and preparation. But the student will need to appear in person when it is time to evaluate components that require direct interaction.

Our standard

We do not promise unlimited virtual progression.

We prefer that a student know from the start what can be achieved online and where in-person practice becomes necessary.

Transparency protects the value of the rank and the student's trust. Ittai Dojo does not present the virtual format as a substitute for everything Kyokushin requires.

The goal is to use each format for what it can develop well and to recognize its limits clearly.

Before an exam

The decision is made with time.

An exam should not appear as a surprise or a last-minute race. The instructor follows the student's work and talks with them when they consider the student is approaching the level needed to test.

Specific requirements depend on rank and the current technical program. If you are preparing for an exam, the instructor will tell you what material applies and what aspects need more work.
